SECOND QUARTER 2009/10 |
|
Our second quarter has overcome the first three month's deficit and receipts are now ahead of payments at the present half year stage. This is the complete opposite of last year (08/09), mainly due to the reduced activity brought about mostly by the retirement of the Herefordshire and the County Durham reps. They were both fully active, either in whole or in part, at this time a year ago. They made a huge contribution and it is no understatement to say that we miss them. This has meant fewer re-homings, therefore a lower number of in boarding kennels (20 v 29), lower Vet bills (8 v 18) and consequent dog travel (17 v 32) - although some of these travels have been necessarily over longer distances (one for example was 611 miles and involved a night-stop!). These three factors are 90% of Welfare’s spending. It follows of course that re-homing donations are fewer (50 v 64). These donations cover about half the average re-homing cost and other revenue sources are very necessary. Here non re-home donations have held up well and many have Gift Aid attached. This Gift Aid adds an important and welcome part of Welfare’s income and we sincerely thank those who have provided it. It is still proving difficult to obtain even a modest interest return from the Reserve account and so we remain committed to fixed interest bonds from FSA protected sources. We have also benefited by three figure contribution from the Midland Border Terrier Club proceeds from their summer fun-day. In Cornwall Trudi Baird organised a border agility event and was kind enough to send us a similar sum. Our sincere thanks to you all - organisers and participants, well done, we are most appreciative and it is nice to have support of the breed clubs The web-site owner of 'doggie-pubs' (see the link on our links page) continued to extract funds from her various connections (including Purina, the dog food manufacturers). 'doggiepubs' too, came in with a three figure sum. These welcome funds together with our Standing Order supporters (bless ‘em!) put Welfare in good stead for the second half of this year and we hope to be able to report a successful financial outcome at the 2010 AGM – but you never can tell! At the moment we have five bts on 'ration strength' and one in sick-bay. Please feel able to support The Border Terrier Club's special raffle, the details of which are on our Home page. Half the proceeds are destined for Welfare. I should mention it's a jolly good club to join! They were recently awarded first place nationwide for the best annual handbook produced by any dog club for their 2009 edition. The club have a shop on their website. They may have some left. There is a link on our Links page. The Kennel Club’s Border Terrier registrations for the 3rd. quarter of 2009 are almost the same as 2008 (2390 v 2402). For the 2009 year the Jan to Sep total is 6247 v 6941 (in 2008) - i.e. 10% fewer. Several dams are having their 5th litter recorded. You might be interested to know that one of them is barely 3½ years old and has whelped 30 pups in her 5 litters! There is also a litter of 9 pups in one dam’s second litter. A year earlier in her first litter she had 11 pups. Different sires but wow! At this time I wish a happy and healthy New Year to anyone and theirs, who may be reading this.
Bob Bolton, 3 January 2010.
